Grief and Loss
Grief Counseling in Utah County | Palisades Counseling
A Place to Honor, Feel, and Heal.
Grief is a deeply human response to loss—one that looks different for every person. Whether you’re mourning the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life transition, or the loss of something intangible like identity or health, grief can affect every part of your life: emotions, relationships, physical health, and sense of purpose.
At Palisades Counseling, we offer a supportive space to process grief at your own pace. There’s no one “right” way to grieve. Our therapists are here to walk with you—whether your loss is recent or something you’ve carried for years.
Understanding Grief
Grief isn’t a single feeling, but a range of emotional, cognitive, and even physical experiences. It can include sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, confusion, relief, or even moments of joy. These feelings often arrive in waves and may shift over time.
While popular models like the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) are familiar, more recent research emphasizes that grief is not linear. Everyone grieves differently, and it’s normal for the process to take time and include setbacks or unexpected emotions.
Grief can be triggered by many types of loss, including:
- Death of a loved one
- Miscarriage or infertility
- Loss of a relationship or divorce
- Loss of a pet
- Job loss or retirement
- Chronic illness or disability
- Major life transitions or identity shifts
- Unacknowledged or “disenfranchised” grief (such as estrangement, stigma, or hidden losses)
How Therapy Can Help
Grief counseling doesn’t aim to “fix” your grief—but it can help you move through it with support, presence, and compassion. Therapy can provide:
- A safe, nonjudgmental space to express your grief openly
- Help understanding and naming the emotions you’re experiencing
- Tools for coping with overwhelming or intrusive feelings
- Support in adjusting to life after loss
- Space to explore the meaning of the loss and your ongoing connection to what you’ve lost
- Help navigating complicated or prolonged grief, where emotions feel stuck or unmanageable
Our approach respects your unique timeline and cultural or spiritual background. You don’t have to rush your healing, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Grief Takes Many Forms
Some losses are visible and widely acknowledged. Others are private, ambiguous, or socially unrecognized. All forms of grief are valid.
You may feel pressure to “move on” before you’re ready, or you might be unsure if what you’re feeling is grief. Therapy can help you understand your experience and begin to make space for both the mourning and the life that continues after loss.
What to Expect
Each therapist at Palisades Counseling brings their own training and style, but all work from a place of empathy and presence. We’ll meet you wherever you are in the grieving process and support you in finding your own path forward—without judgment, pressure, or timeline.
You’re Not Alone
Grief is a natural response to losing something meaningful. While it may never fully go away, it can become something you learn to carry differently—with support, reflection, and care.
