Suicidality & Self-Harm Support
Therapy for Suicidal Thoughts & Self-Harm in Utah County
Compassionate Care When You Need It Most
If you or someone you care about is experiencing suicidal thoughts or engaging in self-harming behaviors, know that help is available. These experiences often signal deep emotional distress—not a personal failure. At Palisades Counseling, we provide a safe, supportive space to understand what you’re going through and begin the process of healing.
What are Suicidality and Self-Harm
Suicidality includes a range of thoughts and behaviors related to ending one’s life, from passive wishes not to wake up to active plans or attempts. It often arises from overwhelming psychological pain, trauma, depression, or other mental health conditions.
Self-harm, or non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), refers to deliberately injuring oneself without suicidal intent. Common forms include cutting, burning, or hitting oneself. Though not always linked to suicidal thoughts, self-harm is a strong indicator of emotional dysregulation and distress, and increases risk for future suicidal behavior.
Both suicidality and self-injury are serious, but treatable. Seeking help is a critical step toward recovery.
How Counseling Can Help
Therapy can support individuals in understanding the emotional, psychological, and situational factors contributing to their distress. Working with a trained mental health professional, clients can:
- Identify triggers, warning signs, and patterns
- Develop alternative coping strategies
- Address co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, or trauma
- Build emotional regulation and interpersonal skills
- Create a personalized safety plan
- Strengthen protective factors, such as social connection and sense of meaning
Treatment is collaborative and paced according to each person’s readiness and needs. At Palisades Counseling, we prioritize trust, safety, and dignity in the therapeutic relationship.
Who We Support
Our team works with teens, young adults, and adults who experience suicidal ideation or self-injurious behaviors. Whether these struggles are recent or long-standing, therapy can help reduce risk, increase coping, and support long-term recovery.
Safety and Crisis Support
If there is an immediate risk of harm, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For 24/7 support, contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988—a free, confidential resource.
In therapy, our clinicians are trained to assess risk, collaborate on crisis response plans, and support clients in staying safe while working toward deeper recovery. We approach risk management with respect, transparency, and compassion.
Evidence-Based Hope
Research shows that with the right support, people experiencing suicidality or self-harm can and do recover. Evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavioral approaches, emotion regulation training, and supportive counseling, have been shown to reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors over time.
Therapy offers not only safety but also an opportunity for long-term change. The goal isn’t just to prevent harm—it’s to help individuals build lives they want to live.
